About the event
Starting with a prepared slab of clay, choose your desired shapes and Fraktur inspired patterns to create four ornaments of your very own. Learn the traditional craft of “sgraffito,” like early red ware potters of the 1700s. After class, pieces will be bisque fired, painted with a clear transparent glaze, and fired a second time.
Redware decoration of functional, household wares was a tradition that Pennsylvania Germans brought with them as immigrants. The technique of sgrafitto, is just one of several techniques that were employed. For this, a colored liquid clay, called slip, is painted on top of low-fire red clay, then designs are scratched through to reveal the color below. The whole piece is then covered with a clear transparent glaze.
Finished ornaments will be available for pick-up approximately three weeks after the workshop. All materials included.
$90/person, Limited availability.
